1. Who we are; what this is
These Terms govern your use of butfor.ai and the But For study platform (the "Service"), operated by But For ("we," "us"). By creating an account or purchasing access, you agree to these Terms.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 and able to form a binding contract. The Service is built for law graduates and law students preparing for the bar examination.
3. Your account
Access is keyed to your email address. Keep your login method secure; you are responsible for activity under your account. One account per person. Accounts are personal and may not be shared, pooled, or resold: study groups need individual licenses.
4. Purchases, pricing, and access
Payments are processed by Stripe; we do not receive or store your full card details. Prices are shown at checkout. A purchase grants access through the February 2028 UBE administration, unless a different period is stated at checkout. Founding-price purchases include all content added to the purchased package during your access period. Taxes may apply.
5. License to the content
The question bank, integrated question sets, performance tasks, explanations, discriminators, scoring materials, and everything else on the Service (the "Content") are original works owned by But For and protected by copyright. We grant you a limited, personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to use the Content for your own bar preparation during your access period. You may not: copy, post, sell, publish, or distribute Content; share your account; scrape, bulk-download, or systematically capture Content; use Content to build a competing product; or use Content to train, fine-tune, or evaluate any machine-learning or AI system. Screenshots shared publicly for commentary must be limited to a single item and attributed to But For. We may revoke access for violation, without refund, and reserve all other remedies.
6. Not affiliated with NCBE; no outcomes guaranteed
But For is an independent company. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). NextGen UBE and related marks are the property of NCBE. All But For questions are original; none are actual exam questions. The Service is educational study material. It is not legal advice, and we do not guarantee any score, passage, licensure, or other outcome. Bar results depend on many factors outside any study tool.
7. Accuracy and updates
The law changes and reasonable minds differ; we work to a high accuracy standard, flag genuine jurisdictional splits, and correct verified errors. If you believe an item is wrong, tell us at support@butfor.ai; we review every report.
8. Acceptable use
Don't break the law, probe or disrupt the Service, misrepresent your identity, or interfere with others' use. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
9. Your data
Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and how we use it. Your practice data (answers, confidence tags, performance) is used to run the Service and improve the product as described there.
10. Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. We may terminate for material breach (including account sharing or Content misuse). Sections 5–6 and 11–13 survive termination.
11. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and we do not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, But For's total liability arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, opportunities, or exam outcomes. Some jurisdictions limit these disclaimers; where they do, these sections apply to the fullest extent permitted.
13. Indemnification
You will indemnify But For against claims arising from your violation of these Terms or misuse of the Content.
14. Changes
We may update these Terms; material changes will be posted with a new effective date, and continued use after notice constitutes acceptance. The version in effect at your purchase governs that purchase.
15. Governing law; disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the state in which But For maintains its principal place of business, without regard to conflicts rules; exclusive venue for any dispute lies in the state and federal courts located there, and each party consents to personal jurisdiction in those courts.
16. Miscellany
If any provision is unenforceable, the rest stand. These Terms plus the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement. Questions: support@butfor.ai.
